I am new to the blogging community and was wondering how do I go about featuring someone else’s blog?

Question by Delisa K: I am new to the blogging community and was wondering how do I go about featuring someone else’s blog?
I just started blogging a couple of week’s ago, but I have been reading other blogs for a long time. People say oh I was featured on such and such’s blog or you will see This is a feature blog from so and so. How do I feature someone else’s blog? Do I need their permission? Do I just blog about their site? What do I do?

Answer by IKnow
Usually you won’t need to ask for permission to feature or talk about other people’s blogs. You will, however, need to ask for permission to re-use content from other blogs.

Just think about blog like a book. You won’t need the author’s permission to talk or comment about the book, but you do need permission to re-use its content. Many times, due to different reasons, you can’t acquire permission, then what you need to do is to cite the sources when needed.

WordPress question; how do you show only a few lines of a post on the front page?

Question by WhiteIrishReadHead: WordPress question; how do you show only a few lines of a post on the front page?
I have a wordpress blog, and when I post an article, the entire article shows up on the front page, no matter how long it is. I want only 3-4 lines to show, so that the reader has to click on it to see the whole article. I have tried to fill in the “excerpt” box, but I didn’t see any changes.

So please, anyone with WordPress experience, 10 points will be given to the right answer!

Thanks!

(The following assumes you’re on a self-hosted WP blog; you can’t generally make template changes like this on wordpress.com.)

In your Main Index Template (index.php), somewhere within The Loop, you’ll find

Change this to read:

The default excerpt is 55 words. If you want to change this length, you have to add a filter to functions.php.

Your site is protected by copyright automatically from the moment you create it. You don’t have to do anything to get copyright protection.

You need permission from the creators of any pictures you use on your site. There are some very narrow exemptions for fair use in some jurisdictions (education, criticism, parody, etc.), but claiming fair use is risky and must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

You can register the copyright of your site if you want, with the Library of Congress (in the United States). This isn’t necessary just to protect your site, but it gives you more options if you ever have to sue someone. See here for more details:
